Chapter Twelve

Skye

Trey has been awfully quiet ever since we left the restaurant. He got a call while we were eating, and I could tell he didn’t want to answer.

We make small talk on the long climb up to the cabin, and by the time we get there, I’m oddly nervous. Being in a new place again brings out some weird insecurities.

Trey is in the rental office for only about five minutes, and I spend the time walking around a little bit. We’re surrounded by woods, and there’s a small lake where you can swim, fish, and rent a boat. There’s also an arcade and snack bar that’s open for lunch only. In town, there’s a diner, a grocery store, an antique shop, and several art galleries.

I don’t think we’ll be bored. I see a couple off in the distance, sitting on the porch of their cabin rental, rocking in the chairs and facing the water. I’m thinking how nice it would be to share this spot with a lover.

And I have the perfect lover in mind.

If things go the way I want, tonight I’ll be lying beneath the man who brought me here.

“All right, we’re all set,” Trey says, walking up behind me. “Are you ready?”

I turn to face him. “I’ve never been more ready in my life.”

“Well, okay then.” He places a hand on the small of my back and walks me to his truck. We take a long, narrow gravel road to our cabin. It’s at the very end, offering us a world-class view of the lake, surrounding mountains, and forest.

The place is warm and rustic: wood floors and walls, giant oriental rug in the middle of the floor, right in front of a fireplace. The bedrooms are small and cozy, and there’s only one bathroom. But I think it will work out fine.

“I’m going to bring in our luggage. Feel free to pick whichever room you want.”

“Thanks. I think either will be fine. And I’ll come out and help you.”

It doesn’t matter which bedroom I pick. I plan to be sleeping with him. I haven’t figured out the logistics of it all. But somehow Trey Langston will be taking my virginity in this very cabin.

We get everything inside, me carrying the few bags of food we brought. Trey said he wanted to take me out Saturday night. So tonight, I’ll cook us the same nice, hearty chicken casserole my mom’s been making for years.

Once we get everything unloaded, I turn on the oven so I can roast the chicken. Mama says that’s the secret to a good chicken casserole. You have to make sure the chicken is cooked right and that it comes out nice and juicy. I want it to be perfect because Trey has upended his world to look out for me. And I want to show him how much I appreciate it.

“How about a walk around the lake?” Trey says, walking into the kitchen. “Oh, are you hungry again?”

“No, silly. I’m starting dinner.”

He glances at the small clock above the stove.
